Tuff Stuff's Gamer Spring 1997 - 8 - X-Files CCG: Mention

The starter decks have now been divided
into six different decks. ['First Edition'
starters had 20 fixed and 40 random
cards.] Mulder or Scully will appear in
each of these."

Each deck is priced at $9.50.

SUPERHEROES

• This summer, Fleer/SkyBox Interna-
tional has some monumental plans for its
"OverPower" card game. The "Monumen-
tal OverPower" expansion will introduce
289 new cards based on elements from
the Marvel Universe. This expansion will
include the first Marvel starter decks since
the inaugural "OverPower" edition. Unlike
the original starters, these will be ran-
domized to make them less static. "The
old Marvel starter decks were great to
introduce the product, but everybody

knew what they were," says Steve Dom-
zalski, Fleer/SkyBox's head game develop-
er. "You could never really have a sealed
deck tournament."

Like other "OverPower" expansions,
"Monumental" will bring new characters
to the game - but this time with a twist.
"A lot of characters in the Marvel Universe
aren't popular enough by themselves [to
warrant cards], but they have an affilia-
tion with a team," Domzalski explains.
"What we've done is, the Character card
is going to be a team, and the stats will
represent the best compilation of that
team's stats. A good example is Alpha
Flight, a very popular Canadian X-team.
That card will have stats for Alpha Flight
and you'll play Power cards through
Alpha Flight as a representation of the.
whole team. You may pull out Sasquatch,
Snowbird, Northstar, or Puck as Specials."

"Monumental" will present an entire-
ly new game mechanic with the appear-
ance of Location cards - battle sites
where heroes and villains slug it out. For
example, the Fantastic Four can fight at
4 Freedom's Plaza and receive special
bonuses.

Summer will also see another round
of "OverPower" tournaments conducted
across the continent. According to Dom-
zalski, Fleer plans to sponsor six regional
tourneys. "One is at Neutral Ground in
Manhattan (May 24). One is in Hemet,
Calif. (May 24). There's a Canadian
regional in Toronto on May 3." The three
remaining regionals will be held in
Chicago, Seattle, and Huntsville, Ala. - no
dates had been set at press time.

"The winner of each regional will be
flown to Chicago on the July 4 weekend

to play in the national championship at
the Chicago Comicon," Domzalski adds.
"The grand prize at our national this
year is $5,000. Second prize is $1,000."

MISCELLANY

• Last December, Mayfair Games an-
nounced that it won't produce any more
boosters for the "Sim City" CCG. Mayfair's
manager of corporate communications,
Faith Price, says the company is moving
away from CCGs and concentrating on its
role-playing and board games.

This is not to say "Sim City" is dead.
Mayfair will continue to distribute the
popular presorted Atlanta, Chicago, New
York, and Washington, D.C., "City Decks."
"The boosters were all right," Price says.
"But people were really starting to get
into the 'City Decks' more than anything
else. We realized that 'Sim City' isn't

really that collectible of a card game. It's
more of a family card game."

Mayfair will be releasing a new
"Vienna City Deck" later this spring. "It's
going to be in German and will be copro-
duced with a German game company,"
Price says. The foreign-language set will
be distributed in the United States.

"Fantasy Adventures," Mayfair's other
CCG title, is also being put on hold. Nev-
ertheless, ImagiNation Network is design-
ing an animated 3-D version of "Fantasy
Adventures" for its Cyber Park website.
By next fall, gamers will be able to play
against the computer or other on-line
opponents. The game will feature art-
work from the CCG as well as new inter-
active cards.

Star Trek: The Next Generation Collectible
Dice Game. The first two sets were
released at the end of last year and fea-
tured the U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-E and
the Borg Sphere from the First Contact
motion picture.

"Each ship is part of a complete boxed
set with dice representing a ship's sys-
tem," explains Five Rings spokesman
Dan Landers. Players role dice to wage
interplanetary war against each other.

"We'll be releasing four new sets of
dice in late April or early May," Landers
says. Two of these will be 50-dice Fed-
eration and Borg boosters. The other two
releases will be the Klingon Vor' Cha Bird
of Prey and U.S.S. Enterprise 1701-D ship
sets. Each booster set comes 10 dice per
box for $9.95. The ship sets retail for
$14.95 apiece.
